DeAndre Yedlin is now a recognized superstar. As the 1st homegrown soccer player from Seattle to join MLS Seattle Sounders, he became an instant sensation and played both at the Under 20 World Cup and then with the National Team coached by Jurgen Klinsmann. He got worldwide attention at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Shortly after that debut he was offered a contract by professional English club, Tottenham Hotspur and started playing with the team early this year after finishing his season with the Sounders.
It took me a few Sounders games his first season to realize that DeAndre Yedlin was the nephew of one of my son’s teammates playing Emerald City select soccer U11-U13, 1995-1997. Being raised by his grandparents who acted as team managers, DeAndre tagged along many practices, games, and tournaments with his uncle’s team. He was very engaged in soccer even at age 5. While documenting youth soccer and “soccer sidelines” in those days, he became one of my subjects. Little did I know the player he would become… but I’d say he showed passion even then.
