A RELEVANT HEROINE

Let's not forget Shirley Chisholm! She became the 1st black major-party candidate to run for President of the United States in the 1972 election.  She is credited with paving the way for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.  She was very cool, did all kinds of great work. One of her autobiographical book titles, UNBOUGHT AND UNBOSSED, is inscribed on her vault at the mausoleum where she is buried in Buffalo.  I find her legacy relevant to the presidential politics and issues of today.

I made this photograph at my son’s 8th grade Night of Notables presentation.  He and classmates dressed up as notable historic figures and gave speeches that represented those they portrayed. I thought it remarkable that one student became Shirley Chisholm.  My son chose Gautama Buddha.
